Early decisions have a significant impact constraining later developments. This can be verified via multiple examples in engineering projects or more commonly in our lives. Early decisions have to be taken in an ill-defined context where the goals are fuzzy and information available are scarce and qualitative. How to support decision making in such a context?
The presentation will introduce an approach combining coherently different concepts from the design theory and mathematics to develop a modelling framework capable of supporting decisions and favoring creativity via a process of evolution. The presentation will be associated with concrete examples.

Eric Coatanéa received his BS degree in mechanical engineering in 1990 from University of West Brittany, Brest, France, his MS in mechanical engineering from INSA Toulouse, France in 1993 and his teaching certification from Ecole Normale Supérieure of Cachan, France in 1994.
Eric Coatanéa worked for 11 years has a teacher of manufacturing engineering at University of West Brittany, Brest, France while in parallel being very active in track and field. He embarked in joint doctoral studies in 2002 and received his joint PhD degree in mechanical engineering from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland (nowadays Aalto University) and University of West Brittany, Brest, France in 2005.
Currently, he is a Professor of Manufacturing Engineering and Systems Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Tampere University, Finland. He was Marie-Curie fellow in 2005-2007. He held several visiting professorships at different universities. He is in charge of the Manufacturing research group at Tampere University.
His research interests are including design and manufacturing activities, system thinking, and system engineering. More specifically the research focus is given to the early integration of simulations and decision support tools during the initial design phases.
