This photo exhibition of Brancusi’s works was curated in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Romania’s membership in the OIF (l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie). The sculptor Constantin Brâncuși was born in Romania in 1876. He settled in France at the beginning of the 20th century, was naturalized French in 1952, and passed away in Paris in 1957. The « Constantin Brâncuși – la Colonne ou la leçon sur l’infini » documentary about his work will be shown during the vernissage.
A sculptor, painter, and photographer, Brancusi made his career in France. Considered as one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and a pioneer of modern abstract sculpture, his works in bronze and in marble are characterized by a sober and elegant use of pure forms and exquisite finishes. He is mostly known for his abstract sculptures of ovoid heads and birds in flight. He was a friend of the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who cherished his work.
Admission is free upon reservation.
The photographs of Brancusi’s sculptures will be shown at the French Institute of Finland from 16 November to 14 December 2023.
