“Mandabi” (the Money Order, le Mandat) is a 1968 film directed by Ousmane Sembene, one of Africa’s most important filmmakers. The film is a satirical take on colonialism and its impact on African societies. The story follows a rural postman who is sent to the city to carry out a mandate from the colonial government, but is quickly exposed to the corrupt practices and exploitation of the colonial system. Through its use of humor and irony, “Le Mandat” provides a powerful critique of colonialism and its legacy, highlighting the need for political and economic independence. The film is a must-see for anyone interested in African cinema and the continent’s ongoing struggles for self-determination.
