On 5 March, in around 30 European cities, members of the public will be invited to exchange ideas with journalists on the issues surrounding media independence. These encounters are rooted within the tradition of citizen debate in Europe within cafés that are significant both internationally and in the day-to-day lives of locals.

In Helsinki, Café Europa, organized by the French Embassy and the Institut Français, will take place on 5 March at 10.30 a.m. in Cafe Aalto, a place that plays a major role in Helsinki’s social life. Jenni Virtanen, journalist for Helsingin Sanomat, and Ershad Alijani, journalist for France 24, will discuss and share their views on the issues surrounding fake news and misinformation.

How widespread is this phenomenon in Finland and France? How to respond to this challenge that has spread since the rise of social media and which threatens public debate? How do Finnish and French media organisations protect themselves from and combat fake news? Who are the perpetrators of fake news and who stands to gain from the spread of misinformation? These are among the many questions our guests will tackle during a discussion moderated by two journalism students from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. The discussion will be followed by an exchange with the public.

Café Europa 2022 is an original idea of the Institut Français and is part of the programme set up for the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
