FINA = French Institute Nordic Award

The four French Institutes in the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) launched the French Institute Nordic Award (FINA) in 2020. This award aims to promote cultural and scientific cooperation between France and Nordic countries and to reward outstanding marine research achievements.

Theme of the year 2022: “the oceans”

In 2020, France created the Ministry of the Sea, demonstrating its ambition to reaffirm and promote its polar and maritime strategy. In 2021, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences (2021-2030) began. In addition, since 2017 France and Sweden have been linked by a strategic partnership for innovation and green solutions, including the oceanic domain. Finally, in February 2022, the One Ocean Summit will take place in Brest (France), as requested by the President of the French Republic.

In this context, France wishes to reaffirm its commitment to ocean research and promote the work of young Nordic researchers.

FINA 2022 Award: scientific mobility in Brest, a key location for ocean research in France

The FINA award recognises the quality and importance of the work carried out by the winner.

The prize consists of a scientific mobility in Brest, a key location for ocean research in France. It will follow on from the One Ocean Summit, organised in Brest in February 2022. and from the Sea Tech Week which will take place in September 2022, also in Brest. The objective of this research trip is to develop scientific cooperation between Nordic researchers and their French counterparts. Within this framework, the laureates will be able to visit laboratories, such as IFREMER, the European Institute of the Sea, the World Sea Campus, the Roscoff Biological Station, etc. A day will be planned in Paris for meetings such as the ambassador of the poles and maritime issues, the Ministry of the Sea, IRIS, the European Marine Biological Resource Centre, Sorbonne University, etc. The mobility will take place the first week of October 2022.

The FINA Award is a prize dedicated to doctoral students and young researchers

The NAFI Prize aims to encourage doctoral students and young researchers whose research topic is related to the oceans.

In order to apply, the candidate should:

Be engaged in research activity in a Finnish institution (university, research institute, etc.), whatever his/her nationality
Be currently a doctoral student or have held a doctorate for less than 2 years,
Have a research project related to the ocean theme (geography, biology, geology, zoology, oceanography, energy, environmental sciences, chemistry, …)
Agree to participate in presentation activities with the Nordic French Institutes

31 March 2022: Closing date for applications

15 april 2022: Communication of the names of the winners
19 May 2022:
-Webinar between the 4 Nordic winners (one per country)
-Presentation of the FINA award at the Residence of France to the Finnish winner. Attendance is mandatory for the winner.
