Math in Medicine: How can Innovations in Mathematics be Used in Healthcare

Thursday, September 8, 2022 17:00-19:00

The Café Scientifique on Thursday 8th of September at 17:00 will welcome researcher Niami Nasr for a presentation of her work on the theme: Math in Medicine: How Are Innovations in Mathematics Used in Healthcare?

Institut français de Finlande
yrjönkatu 36 00100 Helsinki
room

Cardiac arrhythmia is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year and thus represents a public health problem. In order to prevent its occurrence, and to cure patients, it is necessary to understand its causes and improve its means of detection. Many experts, such as clinicians, engineers, and scientists are combining their efforts to help solve this issue. In this context, how can Mathematicians add to the equation and contribute to the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia?

The presentation will be in English and will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

Niami Nasr obtained her master’s degree in applied mathematics (PDEs, analysis and probability) from the University of Bordeaux in 2020. Since then, she is a PhD student at the Bordeaux Mathematics Institute.
She works in the project team INRIA CARMEN, which is a partnership between INRIA the French national research institute for digital science and technology, IHU Liryc, the Electrophysiology and Heart Modelling Institute that focuses on better understanding and treating of cardiac electrical disorders, and Bordeaux Mathematics Institute. The team CARMEN is specialized in modeling cardiac electrophysiology. It develops mathematical models and numerical methods to simulate the propagation of cardiac action potentials, from the cellular scale to the scale of the body, with the aim of improving the knowledge and treatment of cardiac electrical pathologies and in this context the exploration of all available electrical signals. This thesis is supervised by Jérémie Dardé (Toulouse Mathematics Institute, Université Paul Sabatier), and Lisl Weynans (Bordeaux Mathematics Institute, Université de Bordeaux). The main subjects of interest of Nasr are partial differential equations, inverse problems (specifically the inverse problem of Electrical impedance tomography), and numerical analysis, especially in relation with biology and medicine.
